<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; font-family: inherit;">So here I am! Introducing....... MARC JOHNS (click the link at the caption!)</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; line-height: 19px;">I first found this artist on tumblr, where his signature post-it drawings were being reblogged by so many people. so I got bored today <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">(while studying for sova hahahhah) and decided to search him up.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;">Here's what he has to say about his post-it drawings, which I find quite cool:<br />"</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;">I like the format; it forces the drawing to be simple, and the concept to be focussed. <b>It's not so much about the craft of drawing, but more about the idea, boiled down to just the essentials</b>.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;">" </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; line-height: 19px;">And by "essentials", he really means it!!!! view here:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcjohns/sets/72157594384659839/" style="background-color: #d9ead3;">http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcjohns/sets/72157594384659839/</a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3;">I like his quirky style alot and although many might not regard his post-it notes as real works with much substance, I really enjoy the simplicity of them!!!! I like how he's so unconventional and creative and most importantly, unafraid of what he tries to bring across (even if it seems totally brainless and to put it bluntly, retarded) Actually, most of his post-it drawings appear to be really random and pointless....... like this (which btw is considered rather complicated for his post-it series):</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/117/302125340_ea4cfe0a3d_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="background-color: #d9ead3; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/117/302125340_ea4cfe0a3d_m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; line-height: 19px;">Honestly?????????</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3; line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></div>

This is the most exquisite piece of art I have EVER seen. I really want to see it real-life omgggg I am a nut for things like this that have soooooooo much incredible detail. I love details!!!! tiny things!!!!! I can't even start to pinpoint anything wrong or flawed about this piece of indescribable art. Although it might look like a huge pile of wood from far, this is the kind of work that makes you go from <b>._. </b>to <b>O_O </b>in a split second. It would be an honour to meet this artist in person!!!! This actually kinda reminds me of Andy Goldsworthy's attempt to try creating the suspended spider web out of twigs thing. </div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">This is just cool!!!!! It's a short film made my Pedro Sousa and Daniel Espirito Santo, using the tilt-shift method. I thought it'll be nice to share this! </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;">I love how the scenes captured end up looking like the scenes in the <i>bob the builder </i>show I grew up watching. Watch it and you'll understand what I mean! I like the part where the guy is walking on the roof hahah oh man so cute. And I like how the music chosen really complements the jovial mood of the video too hahah I felt so happy when I was watching it, and so so so much calmer after a mundane 2 hours of bio revision. </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;">Videography is something I'm really interested in too but I've only ever made montages and once, a news broadcast thing for my LA SIA in sec 2. Hopefully one day I'll make a cool vid like this too!!!</span></div>

<i>Red platter </i>(2009)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
polymer clay</div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Miniature food art!!!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I did this really long ago, if I'm not wrong it was in sec 2. I had stumbled upon this blogshop of a girl in malaysia who sold handmade jewelry that was made with polymer clay! After stalking her blogshop for a really long time, my fingers were really itchy to just create some of my own, so after bugging my mum for a veryyyy long time, I FINALLY GOT MY OWN SET OF POLYMER CLAY (from spotlight). The initial excitement set in and my first mini masterpiece was created!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
The red platter serves a strawberry cupcake with a cherry on top, chocolate chip cookie which is obviously too humongous (or maybe it's the subway cookie kind hahahah), a pretzel, and a donut with white cream and... yellow puffs of... lime... cream on top? Yes hahahahah that's what my sec 2 brain came up with. It was quite a long time a ago and what I can rmbr is that it was a rather tedious process to have to roll the 'choc bits' into such tiny balls and stick them on. but honestly, fun is the word to describe this.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm actually quite sad that I didn't think of doing something like this for coursework, although that would've been something like xueying's coursework. WHICH REMINDS ME, I thought of doing this post cos I saw <a href="http://boogleboogienoodles.blogspot.com/2011/09/make-my-tummy-go-growl.html">xueying's post</a> the other day! I srsly don't know how kim burke or any other polymer clay artist makes their product look so real. JUST LOOK AT THIS:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.craftycrafty.tv/polymer%20clay%20food.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://www.craftycrafty.tv/polymer%20clay%20food.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
image from google</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I tried to reason out and research on why mine just looked like a kiddy plate of coloured clay instead of realistic mini food, and realised what impt factor was that I didn't have the necessary tools and COLOURS. Yes the pack of polymer clay that I bought had only 4 colours, red yellow orange white beige brown! And of course, I need more practice and time to experiment how to create textures :)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, the pack has been resting in my shelf for quite some time. I'm definitely gonna spend some time after eoys to create a whole 8-course meal okk!!!!! *excited*</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>1/8, Dare to Dream</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My coursework revolved around the idea of dreams. not the literal dreaming-when-you-sleep kind, but the aspiration, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">梦想 </span>kind of dreaming. The medium I decided to use was colour pencil, and <a href="http://cherfolio.blogspot.com/2011/07/colour-pencil.html">click here</a> for more details regarding the choice of medium! The loyal set of colour pencils that I used was Derwent Studio set of 72. So anyway, my work was largely meant to be a motivational piece, and I wanted viewers to get a straightforward idea of what I was trying to say. I'll explain more about this over the next few boards, but basically my final work consisted of 4x A3 horizontal posters!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>2/8, The Story of Abraham Lincoln</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This work uses a real life example of a huge dream being fulfilled. The story of Abraham Lincoln is truly an inspiring one. Abe Lincoln didn't get his face on the U.S. 1-cent coin overnight, and neither did his reign as the 16th U.S. President come easy. The untold story, of the determination that Lincoln had as he pursued his dreams, really amazed me when I first did my research on him. He lost his job, lost his sweetheart and was defeated over and over again for various political positions, for lose to 30 years! it was only in 1860 that his dream became fulfilled. Through this piece, I hope to establish the idea that no matter how impossible a dream of ours may seem, it, is, more often than not, achievable-- as long as we put our hearts to it and never give up whatever the circumstance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>3/8, Rapuzel: I've Got a Dream</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The words sung by Rapunzel in Walt Diney Animation Studios' 2010 animated film, <i>Rapunzel: a Tangled Tale</i> were, "I've got a dream~ I just want to see the floating lanterns gleam~". This inspiring Disney story revolved around the theme of "follow your dreams" and it has touched the hearts of many... including me :) You can find out more about the story line <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangled">here </a>. The gist of the story is that Rapunzel eventually got her dream!!! This piece hopes to portray the message that if you dare to pursue your dream, fantasy can become reality.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>4/8, I dare to dream</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This piece reflects my personal take on the theme "dare to dream". Dancing has been something very close to my heart in recent years, and this is indeed what I've been dreaming to pursue deep down. Sadly, the reality of parental expectation and societal expectations makes pursuing dance harder than expected in the real world. However, no matter where life takes me in the next 10, 20, 30, 40 years, I my dream is to never stop dancing. Be it professionally or for my own leisure, I dream, and I believe, that the passion for dance that I have will never leave me!!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>5/8, The Little Boy with a Big Dream</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This piece explores a more literal meaning of what it means to dare to dream. It portrays a young boy holding a crown above his head. The crown is symbolic of his playful wish to become a king on day. This big dream may be too large to rest upon his puny head, but if he dares to dream, who is to stop him? How many of us actually dare to pursue such boomz dreams nowadays? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>7/8, Compositions 2</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My compositions were all rather sketchy, and I must admit that some of them were done after the final was completed. But that's quite fun actually, and spontaneous!!! I like how the first idea that hits me gets translated into my final (although mrs tan might not approve hahaha) ^^</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aO0oDmNwu_k/ToAxgo4RRTI/AAAAAAAABnc/5HrEuvKA5J0/s1600/DSC01603.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aO0oDmNwu_k/ToAxgo4RRTI/AAAAAAAABnc/5HrEuvKA5J0/s640/DSC01603.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>8/8, font studies and others</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The one thing that fused my disparate pieces together was the text in the background. The idea of putting in purple text to thread the 4 pieces together was an idea that mrs tan gave me during the final consultation. I think that adding text was a smart move cos it also adds an extra dimension to the work instead of letting it just be a flat landscape/ portrait. It was very fun trying to imitate the different fonts from microsoft word!!!! The boxed up part at the bottom right-hand corner are actually downsized scans of my final work, which you can view <a href="http://cherfolio.blogspot.com/2011/09/dare-to-dream.html">here</a>!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As I've mentioned, there are much muchmuchmuch more details on the boards! This is just the gist of it! :) do give me some feedback ya, thank you very muchhhh :)</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I can't believe this was my work!!!!! okay so this was a ceramic work I did last year during the ceramics module, and I remember how excited I was to be in this module with mrs tan :) Since coming into aep, I've always wanted to work with the potter's wheel or something, and this was one of the closest encounters I've had with clay! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The requirement of this assignment was that it had to have something to do with NATURE. So I decided to incorporate both the human aspect and plant aspect into one! I'll edit this post again when I've gotten pics of my prep...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
It's been more than a year since I did this work and it's still sitting on the shelf in the kiln room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Creating this piece of work was really really really fun. While the other modules were doing digital things or fashion drawings with marker and pen, we were having an awesome time doing hands-on!!!! K let me talk more about the process... so I started with the base, which is the hand. but if you can make it out, it's also supposed to be the roots of the tree at the same time. The fingers were moulded painstakingly, but if you refer to the first photo, the index finger cracked off after going into the kiln :( </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Anyway I used the garlic presser to squeeze out the 'veins' on the hand and once again it's supposed to be both veins of the human and vascular bundles/roots of the tree. The fingernails are a gross shade of brown, just to make the whole work more earthly-toned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then it came to the tree trunk/ arm. This part was so fun to do!!! basically I used coils and coils of clay, piled one of top of the other, and in the end applied loads of slip in a haphazard manner to create the rough, spiky texture. It's supposed to look like a tree trunk. does it???? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The painting part was also fun fun fun. I added lots of water to 3 shades of brown and just allowed them to trickle down. that's how I got this effect. I'm honestly very happy with how the bulk of it turned out (as in the colours and texture and shape). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then it came to the not-so successful part...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/315994_10150323540717978_606357977_8088559_644776906_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/315994_10150323540717978_606357977_8088559_644776906_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The leaf didn't turn out as 'leafy' as I had wanted it to, with regards to the texture. What I did was take a slab of clay and when it was dry enough, and shaped it in such a way that the clay started to crack and give a very natural, leafy feel. It did crack a little as you can see from above, but I guess cos clay itself is a very dense material, it didn't turn out as how I envisioned it to be. I think if I hadn't painted it green, it wouldn't even look half like a leaf! and if you're wondering why the outer coat of the leaf is red, it's to symbolise the human colour- the colour of blood.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The message behind my work, if put into a sentence, would be:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
WE ARE A PART OF NATURE, NOT APART FROM NATURE</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Sounds familiar? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was one of the first few bigger paintings that we did back in 2009. I remember doing lots of good prep for this and I'll find a time to add them in asap!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This assignment was done in view of anti-drug campaign submissions and the medium we were expected to use was water colour or poster colour paint. And just a random thought, I realise in aep we've never really been taught how to use a certain medium, for example water colour. It kinda gets integrated into the curriculum when we do assignments like this >>> this is what I didn't expect when I first entered AEP in 2008! How we picked up new art skills so subtly is actually quite fascinating!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Back to the painting...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm happy with how the sense of depth was achieved in the final work! I tried very hard to achieve this by overlapping the different pills, capsules and tablets (aka drugs), and introducing jet black background in the spaces. The work is obviously not meant to be very realistic, but sadly in the process, the face became a little too distorted. Then again this was the very first time I painted a human face, so I guess the tones rendered are considered not bad?^^ the eyebrows are too bushy though, and the thick lips make the gender of the figure a little.... ambiguous. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What I also realised was that sometimes, things that turn out good happen my chance. For explain if you look at the syringe, the prep work I did for it was actually must better and well-blended. but for the glue, I think the final painting of it was more realistic, with a very light shadow to it. Also, some of the drugs suffered a sad fate cos I applied too much water to it, causing the paper to start to flake off. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As for the story behind the work, I just hope to highlight that taking drugs is something that you can't back out of. The jail bars are supposed to symbolise both prison bars (which drug abuser will land themselves behind if they were to be caught), and metaphorically, a sort of entrapment --- once you start, you can't stop. The drugs were deliberately painted in a wide array of attractive colours to represent how they seem so harmless. Yet of course we all know what harm they can bring yes?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So in conclusion, the same message applies till today</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
SAY NO TO DRUGS EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was a yearly assignment that we did since sec 1, for the lifeskills camp tee design! I admit that I never really put in my 100% effort into these assignments and I kinda regret now :( the lackluster ideas that I had a year ago are really quite saddening haha but I only have myself to blame!!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway the main idea for this assignment was to explore varying lines - thickness, patterns (eg: dotted or bold). The main idea for this is that the girl who was lost, went through the maze (which I'm not sure whether the maze is solvable oops), and throughout the journey she experiences turbulence and new ventures such as rockclimbing and kayaking,... and at the end of the 5 days, finds herself!! okay, my idea is quite straightforward and kiddish, BUT SO TRUE :) OBS was a really fulfilling experience and even though my design wasn't chosen, it pretty much sums up my obs experience!</div>

<i><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">This was one of the most memorable assignments ever!!!!!! Basically our class had to paint a nanyang-related subject matter with adaptations from a chosen art movement. The movement I chose was fauvism, known characteristically for the exaggerated use of colour and simplified forms. I decided to paint with reference to this famous artwork....</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/matisse/green-stripe/matisse.green-stripe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/matisse/green-stripe/matisse.green-stripe.jpg" width="430" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The Green Stripe</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-style: normal; line-height: 15px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3;">40.50 cm × 32.5 cm, Oil on Canvas</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">by Henri Matisse</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">My painting doesn't really tell much of a story, and it was actually just a direct 'translation' of Matisse's painting into the Nanyang context. While most of my classmates chose to paint the building or other significant parts of nygh, I chose to paint a nanyang girl as I felt that was really representative of what Nanyang was made of--- us and our symbolic hongzi! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">The biggest challenge I had with this work was the STYLE. Fauvist brushstrokes are generally thick and NOT well-blended. And sadly, that's just the opposite of what I usually practice. I am someone who likes blending everything nicely!!! not a perfectionist like xindi yet not like zhiping who fancies sketchy outlines. So when it came to this assignment, it was very very very very hard for me to restrain from blending. I had to deliberately apply brushstrokes that stood out for no apparent reason, apply brushstrokes that overlapped when I had a dying urge to press them down. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">Frankly, it was torturous at first.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">But thanks to shiyin, we kinda had a plan to "share resources". I imparted my skill of patience to her while she imparted her skill of 'daringness' to apply thick paint on the canvas to me. Anyway this was her work, and we had a really fun time 'collaborating' with each other to complete both works!!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Shiyin's work </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">(her movement was Pop Art as you can see, and the brushwork needed to be much more well-blended and this took SO MUCH PATIENCE. but it was super fun!!!!!!!)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">Quoting shiyin, "I feel that this assignment has allowed me to know (VERY CLEARLY) what my weaknesses are". Yes I realised that it's really very hard for me to step out of my comfort zone to try a very different style of painting. I eventually completed the work after smashing on layers and layers of paint. It was a super super unforgettable experience but I'm glad I learnt many new oil-painting techniques through the assignment, such as how to pile on paint without smashing down the previous layer (ok I need to learn the technical terms someday)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">Here are more photos up-close!!! honestly I doubt I'll ever do such a painting again. unblended brushstrokes are really not my thing hahahah :) </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Got bored of doing math practices which explains the sudden spam of posts. I was thinking of what to blog about other than the 2 posts that I just did up (scroll down). So I took out the cam and started snapping things around my house that I don't usually notice. And I realised that there was actually so much to take notice of. I was quite fascinated by the "treasures" I found around my house!!! the nooks and crannies that seem so insignificant actually look really pretty when you look closely :-)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
1. I found a spider web near the window at the main door!!!! of course my first reaction was GROSSSS. but then I took a closer look, and I realised how beautiful the pattern of the web was! the web was so fine, so fragile, so delicate, and I really think the spider who spun it is a true artist. No human will ever be able to create something even close to that. Of course, I didn't destroy that fine piece of art. Maybe I'll see the artist crawling somewhere around my house later............</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
2. TWO HUGE CRACKS IN THE WALL. My house has plenty of this kind of wall. I don't know what it's called but it's the kind that's hollow and easily taken down. I bet the culprit who created the holes was my dad cos this was found around his living room "territory"!!! he probably used too much force to open up the reclining chair hahaha. Anyway, I found a subtle beauty in the cracks, especially the one in the first photo. they're something really raw and unexpected, and I would think that road cracks from earthquakes appear that way too. Almost like a piece of art, <i>almost</i>. Cracks have a negative connotation most of the time, but in the case of those on my walls, I would like to think of them as an artistic deco!!! and also, a reminder to my dad to please stop destroying our house :-)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IB5LbfbeM-c/Tn8EpkoKgiI/AAAAAAAABlU/CBZnCmXZAuE/s1600/IMG_0429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IB5LbfbeM-c/Tn8EpkoKgiI/AAAAAAAABlU/CBZnCmXZAuE/s640/IMG_0429.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
3. Wear and tear on the leather study chairs. I like how the outside is black while the inside is white, striking a nice b&w balance along with the texture of the chair. Sadly it wasn't meant to be this way when it was first bought, so this is a sign that we need to buy a new one. By the way that's my dad's chair<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UTSlT923Jl0/Tn8EuhuBpyI/AAAAAAAABlc/DVHYOHa8tKk/s1600/IMG_0435.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UTSlT923Jl0/Tn8EuhuBpyI/AAAAAAAABlc/DVHYOHa8tKk/s640/IMG_0435.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
4. Toilet wall!!!!!!!! I took this photo sitting where I sit everyday when I'm doing my... business. Since young, I've moved house more than 4 times, but every house I live in, I would take notice of the tile patterns and make up shapes (like how people make up shapes in the clouds)! Try to spot the side-profile of my toilet friend (left side)! There's a dot protruding out if you can see? that's the nostril. The rest, try to make it out for yourself^^<br />
<br />
So why not take a study break and walk around your house and spot these's little things too! you might find cracks to blame on your dad, or textures you never really noticed before, or more!!! it's quite funnn and de-stressing :D</div>

I love doing doodles with my trusty black-ink china pen. The tip is quite fine and the ink never seems to run out!!!! I think there's something very special about pen work, even with just squiggly imperfect outlines and lack of shading/ lack of 3D effect. I know chiawei likes to do this kind of thing too, just that her level of competency for penwork is like WOAHHHHH while mine is very b a s i c. But anyway, here are just some of the doodles I thought of sharing :) I usually doodle in my doodle-book before I start mugging, or when I get so sick of mugging and just need to release and doodle!!!</div>

This is a keychain that my batchmate karyan got for the whole batch when she went overseas!! I love it alot although both the ears have fallen out :( anyway, if you can see, the doodle book is really really thick. My friend got it for my birthday this year cos she knows I love doodling. It's been about.... 3 months? and it seems never-ending!!!! It's just pages and pages of sparkly clean blank paper and I find so much joy in filling up the pages. As you might have noticed too, I usually fill up not more than 1/2 the page. it's my preferred composition for this kind of thing, cos it makes it less cluttered and more viewer-friendly!!!!<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The next few pics are from my planner. I used to do ALOT of random doodling in my planner, mostly in pen or colour pencil. I would doodle when the I was too bored or when I felt like it. Sometimes I would just do block text to mark down a special event such as syf or a school holiday. Sadly as the year passed, the pages got dull and duller :( I don't even bring the planner to schooll anymore cos there just isn't time to doodle when the day is filled with doing practices, revision papers, marking, taking notes. Sad life </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But I still doodle at home!!!</div>

I'm not really a photography person like zhuhong, but here are a few shots I daringly tried to take of a little kitty I saw at my void deck, some time last month. I don't think it was a stray cat cos it had a collar, but the owner was no where in sight!!!! Honestly it was a really heart-pumping experience cos the cat looked like it was gonna come and pounce on me!!!! The photos are a little dark cos it was gonna rain and I'm not a pro at camera so I didn't know what settings to adjust it to :( </div>

I TYPED IN "STREET ART" ON GOOGLE IMAGES AND LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!!!!!!!<br />
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://art-website-creative.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/edgar_mueller.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://art-website-creative.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/edgar_mueller.jpg" width="465" /></a></div>

<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
THIS IS CRAZY!!!!!!!!!! I TOTALLY SAT UPRIGHT WHEN I SAW IT. Anyway if you haven't realised, that's a FLAT PAINTING on the ROAD!!!!!! You can actually make out the drain cover somewhere around the middle-left and bottom-right hand corner. I'm at a loss for words now oh my, this is a really super high level of art man!!!! It brings a whole new dimension to an otherwise dead-looking town!!!! The downside is that I think it only appears 3-D from certain angles (like the one in the pic).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, the astounding artist is Edgar Mueller, click click click >>> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #d9ead3;"><a href="http://www.metanamorph.com/">http:<span class="Apple-style-span">//www.metanamorph.com/</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span"> and he is my dad's age<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">! The work above and it is one out o</span><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">f </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">the few huuuuuuumongous 3D street art works that he has done. </span></span></span></span></div>
<blockquote>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: #ffe599; font-family: inherit;">"He paints over large areas of urban public life and gives them a new appearance, thereby challenging the perceptions of passers-by. The observer becomes a part of the new scenery offered. While going about their daily life, people change the painting's statement just by passing through the scene." </span></blockquote>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://art-website-creative.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3d-chalk-art-waterfall-parking-lot-edgar-mueller.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="499" src="http://art-website-creative.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/3d-chalk-art-waterfall-parking-lot-edgar-mueller.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DyX2DSzZx0E/TSeXdtmp6pI/AAAAAAAAAZU/Eypa0OxicXI/s1600/3d1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="419" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DyX2DSzZx0E/TSeXdtmp6pI/AAAAAAAAAZU/Eypa0OxicXI/s640/3d1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If I'm not wrong, he doesn't work alone. So for example, the waterfall one was done with a few other local artists, but he's the mastermind!!!! What really took my breath away was how realistic the paintings are, especially the waterfall one cos the weather (at the time of the photo) seems to tell the same story as the rapid river. As for the lava one, although it seems too impossible for a whole town to be resting upon a lava valley, I think the work opens up many many many doors of possibilities for the people living around there/ tourists and viewers. Can you imagine the little kids who live there growing up with such a mesmerizing street at their doorstep!!!!! I am really very fascinated as you can see hahahaha<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once again, I am reminded how important patience and prep work is through this work. Ya I have never really been a fan of doing prep work and often dread having to "do prep for the sake of prep" BUT this work proved me wrong in more ways than one. Firstly I srsly doubt Mueller could have come up with this without tons and tons of prep studies. He would've had to experiment with how to render such delicate brushstrokes to depict splashing waves, experiment with hundreds of shades of blue to make the ice look realistic and etc. Secondly, the ANGLE. That has to be the hardest part of his 3D street art, getting the angle right. So here's a video of the process and viewer response for one of his works:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3SNYtd0Ayt0" width="560"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think it's interesting how people tend to avoid the middle part and walk on the "edge" of the path even though everything is actually step-able hahahahahahah!!!! And I think such works really raise the awareness of art in a society, cos something like this screams "LOOK AT ME, I AM ART, COME TO ME, BE FASCINATED BY ME", rather than the sculptures that we have all over Singapore that people hardly take notice of and walk by as if they're worth nothing :( </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mr edgar mueller!!!!! can you come to singapore please?????? :) </div>
</div>
</div>

Introducing.............. COLORMEKATIE!!!!!<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I learnt about<b> colormekatie </b>back in 2009 and used to be an avid follower of her colourful, inspiring blog. She's a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">"<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 19px;">freelance photographer, actress, street artist and fun maker" and her posts never fail to light me up. Do check out her blog! Anyway, I started to visit her blog less and less frequently, but a few days ago I chanced upon this post </span></span><a href="http://colormekatie.blogspot.com/2011/04/rainy-week.html">http://colormekatie.blogspot.com/2011/04/rainy-week.html</a>! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is street art at its finest, where not much manipulation had to be done, yet such a clever piece of art is conjured!!! What katie sokoler did was just take a few rubber duckies and bring them into a different context, and with that little bit of creativity, she brought about a whole new level of significance for the otherwise insignificant puddle of rain water. Other than for the sake of fun, I think katie wanted to use this as a reminder to "viewers' to appreciate the little things in everyday life (eg,the little puddles of rain with their subtle but beautiful reflections of the sky!)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I shall try street art one day. </div>
</div>

These people are spoiled, selfish, arrogant and sluggish when it comes to work, and are unable to withstand social pressure or work hard like their parents' generation (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawberry_generation">wiki, 2011</a>). This is all due to the overprotection of parents, when the kids </span>被父母宠坏, and also because of the increasing economically prosperous society that the new generation has grown up in. Most importantly, in the context of this work, it symbolises consumer behavior.</div>

I am really drawn to this work, mainly cos of the colour scheme and the title. We did a chinese compo on 草莓<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">族 before so I kinda knew what it meant, and then I saw this work and was taken aback by how creatively clever the artist was in trying to convey her hidden message. I guess this work is a social commentary? about the new generation of people, not just about the taiwanese (the term </span>草莓<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">族 was derived from taiwan) or about the westerners (they have something called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Y">Generation Y</a> as well), but about singaporeans, about us. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I like the artist's concept alot. I like how she depicts the huge maybank building right smack in the middle cos it's symbolic of singapore's cbd area. I like how she handles her pen and water colour as well, leaving the final work as something that's not spotlessly perfect as you can see from the shaded areas of the maybank building. On the other hand, someone like xindi or jiashin would've created something totally clean hehehehe. I think her pen work is really fascinating cos it kinda looks like pencil work in the end???? And lastly, I really like how she uses monotone for the whole work EXCEPT for the strawberries that are painted with such a rich shade of red. They even look juicy and edible!!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Anyway, I think the artist is trying to convey the message that the new generation is becoming increasingly selfish and greedy, only wanting to take take and take, and not give give and give; also she may be trying to highlight the over-reliance of things that come by so easily in this day and age. The idea of a bowl of ripe,red strawberries blatantly lying there for anyone to take is just genius. The <i>ALL U CAN EAT BUFFET STARTING FROM $9999</i>banner also tells us alot about how money is valued today. An increasing number of people are willing to settle anything and everything with $$$$ and this is precisely why we see the disappointing trend of </span>草莓<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">族s in singapore. What happened to the nation that worked so hard and so humbly for a better life, for a brighter future for their families and for singapore? Development and technology is consuming the younger generation as much as we are the consumers of technology. how ironic.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wonder if I'm considered as a part of the 草莓<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">族</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">hmm</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">It's the start of a long day of eoys mugging and I thought of starting it with a post for this blog. I managed to dig up an old essay that I did back in 2009!!!! I scored quite well for this essay (but that's just for sec 2 sova work when the bar was lower than it is now hahahahahaha). Contemporary artist Ik-Joong Kang’s work, <i>Happy
World,</i> has more than one version in the world. The one that I personally
saw in Singapore Art Museum’s Korean Contemporary Art Show was one that was
485cm x 485cm in size. <i>Happy World</i>
(2006-2008) consisted of more than 2300 wood tiles with a layer of glaze, some
old toys and objects, pieced together to form an eye-catching on-the-wall
exhibition. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><i><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;">Happy World </span></i><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;">is
a very representational piece. The tiles present in the art work each represent
dreams and memories of children. One tile that I distinctively remember is the
one with a pale blue moon jar on it. This tile is repeated quite a few times,
each with different coloured backgrounds. According to my research, moon jars
represent peace and harmony </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000; line-height: 18px;">(why do you think it represents peace and harmony?)</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;">. </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">This</span><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;">
exhibition also includes objects stuck onto random tiles. These objects include
a can opener, a <i>Beyblade</i>, <i>Bionicle</i>, and a Yo-yo, key chains, push
pins, a huge stapler, a calculator, clock, many mirrors, and the list goes on;
in other words, everyday items.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Kang
made use of the elements of colour, repetition, scale, variety and emphasis to
make this a complete piece. Colour and scale was overwhelming at first sight. Because
of the mix of a large variety of tiles, colours from all over the colour wheel
were present. The large scale square exhibit caused it not to be missed in the
museum. Repetition was present using tiles, as well as emphasis on two groups
of tiles in the upper part of the work.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><i><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;">Happy World </span></i><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;">reminds
me of a child’s playhouse. Its playful colours, objects present on it, and
general look, gives the impression of fun and laughter, providing me with a
happy, relaxed mood. It even reminds me of my childhood and how I once used to
play with toys. I believe this is what Ik-Joong Kang aimed to bring out of the
viewer from his work. I also think that he deliberately made use of actual
objects and not just pictorials to depict the realness of a child’s desires,
dreams, memories, and childhood. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">The
tiles that Kang used were 3 inch by 3 inch (palm sized). According to an Asian
belief, whatever is on the palm reflects what is on the mind. Therefore, what
is on the tile is what is on the mind, in this case being dreams and memories. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-SG" style="line-height: 115%;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">What
I like most about this work is the fact that the real objects made the piece more
interesting and interactive. As compared to <i>Pencil
2</i> by Hong Kyoung Tack, <i>Happy World</i>
was definitely more appealing to the eye because of the 3D things on it. To me,
<i>Pencil 2</i> was very complicated and more
difficult to appreciate because of the overly striking colours, as compared to <i>Happy World.</i> For this, I have to salute
Ik-Joong Kang for his fabulous, unforgettable piece.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<<< this exhibition has no title</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has no name to it, no explanation to it, and in turn, I find no reason to call it a work of art. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although it is commonly expressed that the definition of art is subjective, this is one of those works that I look at and feel strongly against. How can a nude man label himself a work of art???? Frankly speaking, I am absolutely disgusted by his exhibition, or rather, the public exposure of his body. We have been exposed to nude paintings in SOVA for 4 years now, yet I still cannot come to terms with a real nude body (of the opposite gender, especially) being publicly displayed. Yes he might be trying to convey the message about "removing the trappings of identity", but I feel that this extremity was unnecessary.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Having to pay a hard-earned $250 <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">to take a photo with this man makes the exhibition even more </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">离谱 to me.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that this exhibition has accepted as a work of art in our stereotypically conservative Singapore society, I do have some things to comment about regarding the social responsibility that artists need to uphold.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to Mr Jose Tay, the deputy director of Art Stage Singapore, permission was sought from the Media Development Authority, MDA, before Venkanna's exhibition was given the go ahead. Extra precautions had been taken with this exhibit to ensure that visitors did not feel uncomfortable. Yet how many people can say that they didn't feel the slightest bit of discomfort upon being seated beside the naked man? It might have been an exciting experience to some of them..., but this is something I feel that the female audiences of this work shouldn't have been exposed to. It infringes on the boundary that draws the line between male and female privacy. If I go down this line further, it will become an LA essay!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I shall move on to another component of the exhibition, which is the Frida Kahlo painting in the background. As quoted from <a href="http://www.csulb.edu/~karenk/20thcwebsite/438final/ah438fin-Info.00059.html">here</a>, "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">She shows herself split in two: one Frida wearing native Indian costume, the other wearing European dress. They are connected by a bloodline that runs from heart to heart.... A graphic image of heartbreak in which Frida's inner suffering is turned inside-out" and <a href="http://www.fridakahlofans.com/c0290.htm">here</a>, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">"</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 0px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">she admitted it records the emotions surrounding her separation and martial crisis". </span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sadly, this confuses me even more.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I find it really difficult to see the connection between Venkanna's intended message "removing the trappings of identity" and the meaning behind Kahlo's painting in the background. Perhaps a shallower significance of the painting being there was just so that there would be an artistically-appealing juxtaposition of the viewer+Venkanna and frida+frida when the $250 photo was taken.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All in all, I know that I've taken a rather cynical approach to talk about this exhibition, but I would like to justify that I by no means intend to put down the artist!!! I respect his artistic intentions but feel strongly that this exhibit was a little too extreme. If you do some research, you'll find that his works are generally... very suggestive/ sexual, and I feel rather uncomfortable viewing his works.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These are just my opinions!!!! :)</div>

<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">DREAM</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">, by Teo Zhi Ping</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">The coursework journey has just ended for AEP4 and I'm very proud to have been a part of this group of artists. Just as I put a whole lot of effort into my small-scale coursework, I've seen my fellow friends work so hard as well, be it creating installations, digital work, or canvas paintings. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Last Wednesday, I had my viva voce (I'll talk about this in another post!) and during the waiting time, a group of us went on a "tour" to see all our completed works, and we came to Zhiping's large installation. To me, it seemed to have conjured out of nowhere (cos I wasn't in schl during the earlier parts of Sept holidays when she was working on the structure), but it's one of the works that I really really like, for more reasons than one.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Dream</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"> is an installation that is meant to be interactive. As you can see from the photo above, it's meant for one person to enter at a time. My first impression upon seeing the full work, hanging just outside the school art gallery, was that it was really</span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"> majestic</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">. I've heard many others say that it resembles a jellyfish, but I beg to differ because jellyfish tentacles don't grow from the top of the bell!!!!</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Anyway, my first experience with the work was in the early morning of 13th Sept, and I was probably one of the first people to touch the completed work. I was intrigued by the softness of the feathery yarn/threads that hung down from the shell above, because they seemed so endless. The colours chosen were red, black and white, and the richness of the red had such an attractive force to it. I think it was a smart move to use red as its richness really draws viewers to the work. Stepping into the work was an interesting experience as well. I must admit that I was one of the culprits who wore shoes in, because I didn't realise that we had to take them out until zhiping told us!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ylJF9RmqLo0/TnNtYSSHVmI/AAAAAAAABj8/MIu9pOIZf_0/s1600/AEP+COURSEWORK+FINALLY%2521%2521%2521+014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ylJF9RmqLo0/TnNtYSSHVmI/AAAAAAAABj8/MIu9pOIZf_0/s640/AEP+COURSEWORK+FINALLY%2521%2521%2521+014.JPG" width="640" /></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Stepping into the work and onto the mirrors, I realised myself becoming subconsciously cautious and careful, trying my very best to avoid the fragile paper cranes and black parts. This lead me to form a few questions in my mind. Was the work about apprehension? about how people tend to hold back before making the next move? about how people allow their lack of confidence to restrict their maximum potential? That's somewhat the sensation that the work made me feel. When I got settled onto the mirror in the middle, I looked above and around me. The work was rather overwhelming - swirls all around, a wide array of colours from the paper cranes, and the closely packed threads that seemed to be keeping me trapped inside. What enhanced the sensation was the MIRRORS. There at least 20 circular mirrors and not just below, but on top as well. Everywhere I looked, there was something, and a reflection of something else. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">My guess was the the work was about life--- about how life is full of uncertainty, of apprehension, of doubt; but when you dare to take the next leap of faith, to take the next step into something new, it's life becomes full of wondrous things beyond your imagination.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Eventually, zhiping gave us a brief "tour" of the work and told us what she actually envisioned it to be about. This "tour" also gave me a revelation and helped me to see it from a different perspective. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Each segment of the work was symbolic of a something she wanted to express. The overall shape of the work was representative of a bell jar or a cage. The dome was made out of papier marche (cardboard + wire frame + newspapers pasted with white glue). I believe she took some inspiration from her EOY 2010 work as well, as I remember it having a bell jar and paper crane inside, if I'm not wrong. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">>> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">A bell jar is a piece of laboratory equipment used for creating </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">vacuums.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">>> A cage is a structure of bars or wires in which birds or other animals are confined.</span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Either way, the idea of enclosing something was trying to be established. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">In this case, the work was enclosing its audience.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span><br />
Here are some questions I asked her in a mini interview:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><i>Q: Why did you choose red?</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">TZP: The most human colour something like that, it's in our blood, it's the colour of life and it's very vibrant and it's one of the most outstanding colours</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><i>Q: Why thread?</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">TZP: I feel that thread flows, you know like a river, like a constant process</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Going deeper into the work: </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white; line-height: 11px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wf7m5vB3HEo/TnNtbxCcI0I/AAAAAAAABkI/6toFbOHgtMk/s1600/AEP+COURSEWORK+FINALLY%2521%2521%2521+097.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wf7m5vB3HEo/TnNtbxCcI0I/AAAAAAAABkI/6toFbOHgtMk/s640/AEP+COURSEWORK+FINALLY%2521%2521%2521+097.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">A reflection of the "ceiling" on the mirrors below reveals the shape of an eye. The eye white is made up of a wooden board (painted white), and the things that go on it are swirls of black polyester thread, a circle of mirrors, and wire with mesh to create a more 3-D effect for the centre of the eye. This part hangs down when you look at it from below and seems rather threatening as it's in such close proximity to the viewer. The eye is symbolic of the critical eye of society that judges and watches every move we make. Quoting the artist herself, it is "</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cccccc; line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Society's eye reflected in an endless process which leads to the depths of infinity- like the mirrors</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; line-height: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">". I guess that zhiping may have gotten her inspiration from an artist we studied in SOVA, Lucia Hartini.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: italic;">Q: Why did you give your work the title "Dreams"?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">TZP: Because I'm trying to tell people to stay true to their dreams. Don't give in to the pressures of society or the people around you. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">From her art blog, :"</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cccccc; line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">it is about holding on to the hopes and dreams you have throughout all the obstacles you face in life, whether it is the judgment of those around you or other personal challenges, because there will always be those around you who believe in you and care about you, <b>who add colour to your life</b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: normal;">"</span></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So we come to the part about the cranes. The cranes in her work hold an extremely great significance. These are the cranes that 201'09 came together to fold for her (to celebrate her being elected as the ny council vice-president) and they hold a very deep meaning for zhiping. I was personally very touched that zhiping included these little gifts of friendship that we gave her into her coursework, and also realised how something that seemed <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #dd4b39; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black;">微不足道</span></span></span></span> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; font-family: Times; font-size: small; font-style: normal;">when standing alone could be given such a strong meaning when brought into a different context! </span></em></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, sans-serif;">In conclusion, I decided to do this revie<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">w as 1) there are many aspects to explore in terms of materials used and the significance behind it, that perhaps this post isn't enough to cover (as zhiping said, "i</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">t is so hard and almost impossible to truly explain your artwork to someone within a few seconds") and 2) the title of this work seems very closely linked to mine: <i>Dare to Dream</i>. </span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">With a similar message to convey, zhiping and I have portrayed it so differently,</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">...and that's what makes art beautiful.</span></span></span></div>

<br />
These are raw designs of the 2011 NYMD CCA t-shirt I envisioned a few months back.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Surprisingly, they were so well received by the CCA that all was needed to be done was digitalization, and we got it printed!!!!! The work was done with a basic black signo dx 0.38 pen and on plain A4 paper. I'm happy with how it turned out because it reflected something different from past years' CCA tees that usually made use of computer fonts. I'm also glad that this work demonstrates my understand of lines, how varying outlines (like in the front, bold lines for "driven by passion" and the back, sketchier lines for the WUdance) can make a difference. It also reflects my liking for the mandala zentangle "doodle" style, with the use of repeated shapes and lines! I'm proud to see the dancers in my CCA wear this design with pride! And that's one of the super plus points of being an art student--- the ability to contribute to my CCA.<br />
<br />
Here's the final product!<br />

The Mandala Zentagle style :) </div>
<br />
I found this user awhile back and was really inspired by his videos. I used to think that people who could come up with those intricate designs really had an amazing brain!!!!!! But after watching these vids, I realised that I could probably do it too, with some creativity and open-mindedness. After much practice (actually I wouldn't call it practice, but just some mindless doodling and experimentation), it eventually became a norm for me to do things from the MZ style, like line repetition and shape repetition, with a basic black pen or marker.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Here are some of the things I eventually incorporated this 'style' into:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/230723_10150232666998488_722773487_8748424_4528782_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="458" src="http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/230723_10150232666998488_722773487_8748424_4528782_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was back in March when my CCA NYMD received Gold with Honours for our SYF piece!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Used a uniball signo gold pen on a plain black A5 page for this </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It really is quite easy to do but when the simplicity came together, it became something really intricate.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/310191_10150353773953488_722773487_9887453_7865108_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="464" src="http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/310191_10150353773953488_722773487_9887453_7865108_n.jpg" width="640" /></a>Another similar piece that I did with the same medium. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This time the MZ style was incorporated more subtly as you can see, like the crescent shape in the middle and the face at the left side that seems to be shouting "2009". Things like this have become a common sight in my recent doodles and even in my event book and teachers' day/bday cards for friends :) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">We visited the Singapore Biennale @ Old Kallang Airport today! </span>This was one <b>really </b>engaging exhibition because I felt that every hidden meaning was so thought-provoking. I also think that the contemporary ideas are what kept me especially interested. However, our tour guide was constantly spoon-feeding information to us, disallowing us to form our own understanding of the works. But I'm sure everyone still managed to have some of our own first-impressions/interpretations, such as certain feelings. For example, once we stepped into the room of "Through a Glass Darkly" by Charles Sandison, there was already a sense of overwhelming darkness, and the spewing words built up the sense of foreboding. The guide asked us a few questions here and there to stimulate our responses (though we mostly kept them to ourselves) as well. </div>

Here are some works that caught my attention:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><i>Deutsche Scheune (German Barn</i>) by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset</li>
</ul>
<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Photos courtesy of Elmgreen & Dragset</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><i><br />
</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This was the one I disliked the most hahahah because I really couldn't stand the stench of the hay. Of course I was mesmerized by the concept - a barn in the hangar. I did some research and learnt that it is typical of the two wacky artists to take things out of their context and place them in another. Just like in this work, where a commonly-seen barn in Germany, is brought into Singapore, a country with hardly any sign of agriculture. It was really an eyeopener for me, though I was seriously disgusted by the taxidermied goat (taxidermy= mounting dead animals for display). Another work of theirs, not in this exhibition: 'Prada store' in the middle of a desert! Check it out <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheedge/794650771/in/photostream/">here</a>!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><i>Public Intimacy </i>by Charles LaBelle</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I really liked this series because of how intricate every detail was, every line, every curve every dark and light tone. I'm the kind of person who will probably never be able to achieve something like this, but ultimately, this work was inspiring. I especially enjoyed the fact that he did a series on Singapore's big and small buildings, ranging from the well-known Esplanade to a commonsight 7-11 branch that people don't usually pay much attention to. Yet in his drawings, he takes note on every single detail (see below), even up till the interior --- snack machines and cashier. </div>
