Marc Johns

HI!!! Eoys are coming soon and the work above pretty much describes me these few days..... -_-

Anyway, this is the first post I'm doing up since the deadline of this e-portfolio (for grading). I'm definitely not gonna stop drawing/ painting etc after aep draws to a close!!!!!!
never ever ever ever ever

So here I am! Introducing....... MARC JOHNS (click the link at the caption!)
I first found this artist on tumblr, where his signature post-it drawings were being reblogged by so many people. so I got bored today (while studying for sova hahahhah) and decided to search him up.

Here's what he has to say about his post-it drawings, which I find quite cool:
"
I like the format; it forces the drawing to be simple, and the concept to be focussed. It's not so much about the craft of drawing, but more about the idea, boiled down to just the essentials.
"

And by "essentials", he really means it!!!! view here:

I like his quirky style alot and although many might not regard his post-it notes as real works with much substance, I really enjoy the simplicity of them!!!! I like how he's so unconventional and creative and most importantly, unafraid of what he tries to bring across (even if it seems totally brainless and to put it bluntly, retarded) Actually, most of his post-it drawings appear to be really random and pointless....... like this (which btw is considered rather complicated for his post-it series):

Honestly?????????

But I like marc johns :) yayyyyy

Tilt-shift

""Tilt-shift photography" refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt forselective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene." - wiki

This is just cool!!!!! It's a short film made my Pedro Sousa and Daniel Espirito Santo, using the tilt-shift method. I thought it'll be nice to share this! I love how the scenes captured end up looking like the scenes in the bob the builder show I grew up watching. Watch it and you'll understand what I mean! I like the part where the guy is walking on the roof hahah oh man so cute. And I like how the music chosen really complements the jovial mood of the video too hahah I felt so happy when I was watching it, and so so so much calmer after a mundane 2 hours of bio revision.

Videography is something I'm really interested in too but I've only ever made montages and once, a news broadcast thing for my LA SIA in sec 2. Hopefully one day I'll make a cool vid like this too!!!

Anyway I stumbled upon this video when I was checking out http://www.craftycrafty.tv/ <<< do check it out!

Colormekatie

Introducing.............. COLORMEKATIE!!!!!

I learnt about colormekatie back in 2009 and used to be an avid follower of her colourful, inspiring blog. She's a "freelance photographer, actress, street artist and fun maker" and her posts never fail to light me up. Do check out her blog! Anyway, I started to visit her blog less and less frequently, but a few days ago I chanced upon this post http://colormekatie.blogspot.com/2011/04/rainy-week.html!

This is street art at its finest, where not much manipulation had to be done, yet such a clever piece of art is conjured!!! What katie sokoler did was just take a few rubber duckies and bring them into a different context, and with that little bit of creativity, she brought about a whole new level of significance for the otherwise insignificant puddle of rain water. Other than for the sake of fun, I think katie wanted to use this as a reminder to "viewers' to appreciate the little things in everyday life (eg,the little puddles of rain with their subtle but beautiful reflections of the sky!)

I shall try street art one day.

Mandala Zentagle

The Mandala Zentagle style :)

I found this user awhile back and was really inspired by his videos. I used to think that people who could come up with those intricate designs really had an amazing brain!!!!!! But after watching these vids, I realised that I could probably do it too, with some creativity and open-mindedness. After much practice (actually I wouldn't call it practice, but just some mindless doodling and experimentation), it eventually became a norm for me to do things from the MZ style, like line repetition and shape repetition, with a basic black pen or marker.

Here are some of the things I eventually incorporated this 'style' into:

This was back in March when my CCA NYMD received Gold with Honours for our SYF piece!
Used a uniball signo gold pen on a plain black A5 page for this
It really is quite easy to do but when the simplicity came together, it became something really intricate.

Another similar piece that I did with the same medium.
This time the MZ style was incorporated more subtly as you can see, like the crescent shape in the middle and the face at the left side that seems to be shouting "2009". Things like this have become a common sight in my recent doodles and even in my event book and teachers' day/bday cards for friends :)

Video inspiration

Too realistic to be true!!!

Was really in awe as I watched this fast-paced painting video. Not a huge fan of Britney Spears but now I'm definitely a fan of this artist. I like the way his treatment of brushwork was very soft, especially when he was doing the hair towards the end. This is really a very very captivating video to watch, esp when he was doing the eye makeup.

Searched up pen art and came across this!!! Another fabulous portrait by a youtube artist though the video seemed to be advertisement for the ONE PEN he used for the entire work!!! The filming wasn't thorough and I could hardly tell how he did this, but it's definitely something aep should expose us to. Personally feel that despite being in aep for 4 years, there are many things that we could have spent time being exposed to, such as how to deal with colour pencil, pen/ink, chalk etc. It would've been cool!!!
